Face-off: The Difference between Dermaplaning & Dermabrasion

Dermaplaning vs. dermabrasion.

Though dermaplaning and dermabrasion sound very similar, the two procedures are used to solve very different problems. Many of our patients at the Vein Clinic of Greater Kansas City have heard horror stories about dermabrasion that instantly scare them away from dermaplaning.

To clear up any confusion, we’re setting the record straight about these two, so you don’t miss out on the treatments you need to get the glowing skin you’re searching for.

Derma-What?

Dermaplaning: With a sharp tool and a steady hand, dermaplaning removes the dulling, layer of dead skin to exfoliate and get rid of fine vellus hair, otherwise known as peach fuzz. The blade is used on clean, dry skin on the forehead, cheeks, chin, nose and neck. While this might sound painful, patients actually report it feels similar to shaving.

Dermabrasion: As the name suggests, dermabrasion involves using an abrasive material to carefully rub the skin. Dermabrasion is commonly used to fix scarring caused by a number of skin issues (think acne, skin cancer, etc.).

Side Effects

Because dermaplaning and dermabrasion are two very different procedures and yield different kinds of results, there are different risks and setbacks associated with each. As the gentler of the two, dermaplaning has few to no side effects, and zero downtime. After the treatment, your skin might look more pinkish than normal, and will be more sensitive to sun exposure.

On the other hand, because dermabrasion actually creates a wound, it has some notable side effects. As with any surgical site, the area should be kept covered until it has healed, and has a greater risk of infection.

Which Treatment Is Right for Me?

KC-Vein-Clinic
Most patients who are looking for a deep exfoliation are thrilled with the results of dermaplaning. Because the process requires no downtime, anesthesia, or chemicals, dermaplaning is a great option for anyone who wants to avoid a visible injury, as well as pregnant or breastfeeding women who want to avoid the chemicals in chemical peels.

Consider dermaplaning if you..

  • Want a smoother, brighter complexion
  • Are looking to get the most out of your topical skin care products
  • Want to get rid of the ‘peach fuzz’ (Dealing with more than peach fuzz? We can help.)
  • Would normally get a chemical peel, but you’re currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • If you have active acne, avoid dermaplaning

Consider dermabrasion if you…

  • Are trying to correct the appearance of scars
  • Have tried other methods of correction, but nothing has worked
  • Are able to undergo local anesthesia, or possibly intravenous sedation
  • Can care for an open wound in the area of concern; knowing that it may last as long as 10 days, and might appear red for up to six weeks after treatment
